Top Activities and Experiences in Chiang Mai: Chiang Mai has been one of my favourite destinations since the time I travelled to Chiang Mai in the year 2013. If you want to visit Chiang Mai, then winter time is the best time to spend there. Chiang Mai is one of the popular destinations in the Northern part of Thailand. Famously known for the historic temples, stunning landscapes, and breathtaking views. There is a lot of activity to participate in, you will definitely fall in love with this beautiful place.
Apart from this, there are also fascinating festivals which you can indulge in. It is perfect for solo travellers who want some time away from the crowd and want to enjoy the cool weather. So now, I have decided to write about the top 35 things that you can do in Chiang Mai. Whether you are here for 2 days or months, this guide will answer all your queries as to which activities you can engage in. It will also tell you about the best area and places to stay in Chiang Mai.
Visit Chiang Mai Best Temples
Chiang Mai is full of temples. You will find temples in almost all corners of Chiang Mai. If you are visiting the temples in Chiang Mai then it is best to keep your shoulders and knees covered. Men should wear full shirts and full pants. Ideally you should face forward in the temple. Do not turn your back to the Buddha to take a selfie. Also make sure that your feet are not pointed towards Buddha or the monk. Pointing fingers is considered an insult in many Asian countries including Thailand. Most of the temples do not charge any entry fee. But if you are going to some famous temples they may charge 20 – 30 Baht.
1. Wat Phra Singh

The temple is famous for its striking gold exterior. It is also one of Chiang Mai’s important religious sites and must be visited by tourists. Its history goes back to King Phayu, the fifth ruler of the Mengrai Dynasty, who initiated its construction. In fact, it was done to enshrine the ashes of his father, King Khamfu. Later on, many buildings were constructed. In the beginning the name of the temple was Wat Phra Chiang and later on it was changed to Wat Phra Singh. The most important structure of the temple is the Viharn Lai Kham. The walls of the Vihran lai kham tells stories about the Sangthong and Suwanna Hong
2. Wat Chedi Luang

It is also known as the temple of the Big Stupa. Famous for housing the emerald Buddha which has been relocated. You think that Wat Chedi Luang is just a big stupa. But that is not true, there are temples, shrines and even Buddhist temples within the walls. The main attraction of the temple is the Chedi, which touches the skyline. The construction began in 1391 under the ruler Lanna King Saenmueangma. At that time, the Chedi was supposed to contain the remains of the King’s father. Even today, it continues to be an important site for spiritual reflection and conducting religious ceremonies.
3. Wat Chiang Man
A Buddhist temple inside the old city wall. Here, you get to view the Elephant Chedi, the main Wihan, Ubosot, and the Lotus Pond. In 1296, Phaya (King) Mangrai ordered the temple to be established. At the same time, two other rulers also agreed to the construction. They were Phaya Ramkamhaeng of Sukhothai and Phaya Ngam Mueang of Phayao. These three kings ordered for the construction of the temple and henceforth it is called the Wat Chiang Man.The temple does not receive as many visitors as compared to other temples. But it is one of my favourite temples due to the chedi with protruding elephants.
4. Wat Phan Tao
This is one of the oldest temples in the old city of Chiang. Wat Phan Tao means the temples of a thousand kilns. The temple is located just next to the Wat Phan Tao. The main temple is made of teak. The building dates back to 1880. The temple is not that spectacular but it is a good idea to visit the temple if you are visiting Wat Chedi Luang. The complex of the temple is a great place to spend some time. You can witness some of the famous celebrations that take place in Chiang Mai. Some of them are Buddhist holidays, Songkran, New Year’s Eve and the Yi Peng Lantern Festival.
5. Wat Sri Suphan
The temple is open from 6:00 am to 5:30 pm. Also, Wat Sri Suphan is commonly known as the Silver Temple. Its architecture shows the exceptional craftsmanship of the Thai people. Located on Wualai Road, Haiya district, in the southern part of the old city, the temple is easy to find. To reach it, you can walk from Chiang Mai Gate down to Wualai Road from the right. And then take a turn into Soi 2 and Soi 3. The temple is not very famous so you will not find a lot of crowd as compared to other temples.
6. Wat Doi Suthep

Situated in Chiang Mai Province, Thailand, it is a famous Buddhist temple. For most Thai people, the temple is considered to be pious and holy. It was built in the year 1383 and is placed on the mountain called Doi Suthep. According to legend, King Kue Na of the Lanna Kingdom was pleased with a monk named Sumana from Sukhothai. The monk received a piece of bone, which was believed to be a relic of Buddha. Later, the bone broke into two pieces. One part was enshrined in Wat Suan Dok. While the other piece was attached to the back of a sacred elephant who was found dead in the forest.
7. Wat Pha Lat
Entering into the temple is like stepping into a jungle. At the entrance, you will find tall trees and bamboo stalks lined up on both sides. Because of its unique setting, it is often called “The Monastery of the Sloping Rocks.” This temple has a viharn, a serene atmosphere, and offers breathtaking views. The temple was made during the reign of King Kuena. It is said that the king ordered for the construction of the temple exactly at the place where the King’s elephant died. Later he ordered the construction of the temple where his elephant rested and one of those places was Wat Pha Lat.
8. Wat Suan Dok Temple
The temple is also known as the Wat Buppharam. It is famous for its Lanna style architecture, serene atmosphere and historical importance. The temple is well known for its white chedis which houses the ashes of Chiang Mai’s royal family. There is also a golden chedi which contains the relic of Buddha. It is an important landmark for those who are interested in Buddha, architecture and spirituality.
9. Wat Lok Molee
This is one of the city’s oldest temples. The temple is famous for its light decoration and celebrations during the lantern festival. This temple is also called the Wat Lok Moli temple. The temple is located on the north side of the north moat surrounding the old city. It lies about 400 meters west of the Chang Phuak city gate. Because it is in the old city, it is easy to travel to the temple. Inside, you will find the Viharn, Chedis, and other attractive statues that will catch your attention.
10. Wat Suan Dok

The temple is situated outside the old city. It is well known and popular for its photogenic white stupas. This temple is also known as the flower garden temple. The temple was initially named Wat Bupparam Dok Mai. It was built in the latter half of the 14th century. This temple was dedicated to the most respected monk, Sumana Thera, from the Sukhothai Kingdom. Its purpose was to protect Northern Thailand from the difficult rainy season. Today, the temple is open from 6 am to 5 pm. At the entrance, you will find many stupas and murals depicting the importance of Thai culture.

If you are a nature lover then head straight to the San Kamphaeng Hot Springs. The San Kamphaeng Hot Springs is amidst a beautiful garden which has many beautiful flowers
It is the best spot to relax and chill . You can swim in the San kamphaeng Hot spring which will help you to relax your muscles and also provide many health benefits.

Chiang Mai is one of the best places to learn authentic Thai dishes. The process involves visiting the nearby market to source the ingredients. Then cook the Thai dish and end it by savouring the delicious meal prepared by you. Most of the Thai cooking classes are located in the Chiang Mai Old City. The cost of a cooking class may vary, depending on where you plan to take the class and also how many classes you wish to attend in a month.
13. Sticky Waterfall (Bua Thong)
This waterfall is one of the famous places in Chiang Mai. It is never crowded and also a happening place to relax and chill. You will mostly find limestone and rich minerals. The rocks are easy to walk without slipping away. On the way you will find a series of ropes and wooden bridges to support your journey. The entry to the waterfall is generally free. It will take you 90 minutes to reach from the main city to the waterfall.
14. The Tiger Kingdom

Have you ever visited a zoo and got close with the animal in your wildest dream? I do not think so. But it is very much possible in the Tiger Kingdom to get close to the tiger and take instagram worthy pictures. It is done under the watchful supervision of the professionals who are trained to take care of the animals. Unlike other traditional zoos where getting close to the animals or taking photographs is prohibited. This particular kingdom even allows you to feed the tigers and play with them for a certain amount of time.
15. Chang Puak Gate Night Market
If you want to get the authentic thai taste in Chiang Mai then you have to visit the Chang Puak Gate Night Market. Here you will get the best Thai food that will leave your tummy wanting for more. Some of the must-try dishes include Khao Soi (Northern Thai noodle soup). In addition, you can enjoy Sai Oua (a spicy sausage) and Mango Sticky Rice. Moreover, there are many famous stalls in this place. Some popular ones are Changphuak Suki, Cowboy Hat Lady, and Yellow Stir-Fry Food Stall.
16. Elephant Nature Park
Lek Chailert began her work in elephant conservation in 1996. In 1998, Chailert discovered Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai Province with Adam Flinn of Green Tours. Chailert held a separate area called “Elephant Heaven” for especially traumatised elephants. Her long-term vision was to transform the park into a sanctuary. Today the park offers protection to Elephants who were once subjected to cruel treatment.
17. Lanna Folklife Museum
The museum was built in 1935 and was mainly used for administrative matters. Earlier, it was the home of the eighth ruler of Chiang Mai, Chao Intavaroros Suriyavongse. To learn more about the tradition, culture, and history of the area, it is best to visit this museum. Later on, the building was turned into a museum by the Department of Treasury and the Court of Justice.
18. Sunday Night Market

It is one of the busiest markets in Chiang Mai and is the main bargaining hub for most of the visitors. Here, you will find authentic goods made by the local Thai people. These items reflect the craftsmanship of the people who make goods from silk, paper, fabric, wood, metal, glass, and ceramic. The market is located within the old city walls and stretches from the Tha Phae Gate to the Wat Phra Singh Temple on Ratchadamnoen Road.
19. Doi Inthanon National Park

It spans an area of about 482 km². King Inthawichayanon was the last ruler who was deeply committed to preserve the forest and save its rich wildlife. He wanted his remains to be placed in the park after his death. The park was placed in his honour. It is best to visit the park from November to April when it does not rain a lot and remains cold most of the time of the year. It is best to avoid the place during the rainy season which lasts from may to october.
20. Meditation Retreat
Chiang Mai is a popular choice for meditation retreats. It offers all options, from monastery settings to modern setups. The duration of the wellness retreat may differ. You can choose from a half-day retreat to one that lasts several days. These retreats often include activities like mindfulness practice, Vipassana, or other meditation techniques. A typical day might include yoga, healthy meals, and other opportunities for self-reflection. The cost also varies and may range from 0 to 1500 baht.
Best cafes in Chiang Mai
21. Carp Cafe

This cafe is also called the nature cafe. You will experience magic once you enter this magical world. At the entrance you will find an expensive park. Then there is a wooden bridge that leads to a rain forest. The cafe is quite big. Do not forget to take a million selfies. One thing that you cannot miss to do in the cafe is to visit the cafe washroom. The walls of the washroom are made of fish tanks. It would be best if you could reserve a table before visiting.
22. Chom Cafe
If you visit this cafe you will feel like you are visiting the cafe which has just opened recently. But that is not true. The cafe is quite old and is busy most of the time. At the entrance you will find a park which is for the children to enjoy. Then if you walk a little further you will find the rock bridges to walk or jump over, a magical waterfall, and perfect misty conditions. The price of the food is a little expensive as compared to other places. It would be best to make the reservation in advance.
23. Early Owls
This is a popular café in Chiang Mai. It is especially known for its peaceful setting, laid-back atmosphere, and many brunch options. The café is located in a renovated, cozy wooden place with a pond in front. It is also famous for its drinks. You will find everything from coffee, smoothies, and hot chocolate to fruit juices. However, the place is usually very crowded. It is best to visit the cafe on the weekend when the jing jang market nearby is also open. The cafe offers eco-friendly options.

The cafe has been able to build its reputation over the years for its diverse range of dishes. However, it is more popular for its sweet dishes. In particular, the cafe is best suited for people who want to have a good breakfast. Although the cafe is not very big, it has a limited number of tables and chairs, giving it a quiet and cozy feel. But the ambience exudes a unique charm. The most important items that you get in the cafe are bread, waffles, club sandwiches, salads, french toasts and lighter breakfast options. The rates are quite reasonable. It would be best to visit the place in the morning time when there would be less crowd.

Kat’s Kitchen is a beautiful and slightly expensive restaurant in Chiang Mai. It is located on Ratchamanka Road and is famous for its Panang Chicken Curry and Khao Soi. This place is a popular choice for Thai cuisine, especially for those who want to try something new. It has also received excellent reviews. Kat’s Kitchen serves authentic Thai food, has amazing staff, and offers a laid-back atmosphere. The restaurant is open from 9:30 am to 10:30 pm. The rates of most of the dishes are quite expensive but it is all worth it.

This is a popular restaurant in Chiang Mai. It is known for its authentic Thai cuisine and its moral values. The restaurant is usually packed with people. This makes it evident that if you want to visit the restaurant then you need to make the booking in advance. There is usually a long waiting line but it is worth the wait. The most popular dishes that they offer are Pad Thai and Khao Soi, as well as other Thai specialties. The place is quite moderate when it comes to the cost. Mostly visited by families and small groups of friends.
28. Khao Soi Maesai
This is one of the popular restaurants in Chiang Mai. If you are in favour of trying the local Thai cuisine then visiting this restaurant is a must. Some of the popular dishes that you cannot miss trying in the restaurant are curry broth, tender meat, and perfectly cooked noodles. The best time to visit the restaurant would be early in the morning or afternoon time. The restaurant is decent when it comes to pricing. The restaurant opens at 8 am and closes at 4 pm. Mostly visited by family and solo travellers.
29. Huen Muan Jai
This is an authentic restaurant that serves local Northern Thai cuisine. The architecture is basically a Lanna style wooden house with a garden. It is one of the popular spots in Chiang Mai. It is overly priced but every penny spent is worth it. You will find cuisine in the restaurant that you may not find anywhere else. The best part is, the atmosphere is cozy and warm, with a very friendly set of staff. Some of the must-try dishes include Pork and Pork Blood, and Nam Prik Num. As for the timings, the restaurant opens at 8 am and closes at 10 pm.
30. Another World
This restaurant is located in the Phra Singh area of Chiang Mai. It is popular for its traditional Thai cuisine. The food is freshly prepared with locally sourced ingredients. They use innovative culinary creations to prepare the food. The restaurant has an exclusive area for a bar that serves cocktails and other drinks. Another World has good reviews for its warm atmosphere and lovely staff. The restaurant is open from 10am to 6pm. The food is moderately priced and is quite reasonable.
Live Music & Free Events in Chiang Mai
You will find plenty of live music and free events in Chiang Mai. For example, my two favourite musical events in Chiang Mai are North Gate Jazz Co-op (open mic night is on Tuesdays) and Boy Blues Bar in the Night Bazaar. Apart from these, other major events that are celebrated in the city are:
31. Yi Peng Lantern Festival

The festival takes place in the month of November. It comes in the same month when Loy Krathong is celebrated. The festival involves the releasing of thousands of lanterns into the sky, making it a worthwhile view for people. The lanterns are known as khom loi. Moreover, this festival symbolizes the letting go of misfortunes. It also involves praying for the future and expressing gratitude for Buddha. Along with this, traditional parades and Thai dances are performed, which the tourist can really enjoy.
32. Songkran (Thai New Year)

Songkran is a vibrant festival celebrated in the month of April. The festival mood usually lasts from a few days to a week. During this time, you will observe water fights, cultural traditions, and family reunions. One of the most popular spots is the old city moat, known for its lively water fights. Besides this, other locations where you can enjoy Songkran are Kad Suan Kaew Mall and Maya Mall near Nimman.
33. The Chiang Mai Flower Festival
The Chiang Mai Flower Festival is held in the first week of February. It is conducted for a span of 3 days. This festival marks the end of the cool season. During this time, you will notice floral decorations and ornamental plants everywhere. The highlight of the celebration is a grand flower parade with decorated floats, dancers, and local performers. As for the location, the festival is usually celebrated in the main area around Nong Buak Haad Public Park and the streets surrounding the old city moat. Each year, it draws people from all around the world to witness the floral beauty and cultural celebrations.

Some of the venues where you will find live music, bar and venues are The Old City, Old Chiangmai Cultural Center and Khum Khantoke Chiangmai.Some of the famous cabaret shows that you can visit in Chiang Mai are Siam Dragon Cabaret Show and Miracle Cabaret Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai also hosts major sporting events almost throughout the year. Muay Thai boxing is a major attraction that invites visitors from all across the world. Both locals and international tourists come to watch it. You can watch the Muay Thai boxing matches in popular venues like Thapae Boxing Stadium, known for showcasing both professional and amateur fighters. Other sports events and activities include the Pocari Sweat Trail Run and Lampang100 Trail Running Event. Apart from these there are adventurous activities like ziplining, ATV adventures, and even elephant sanctuaries.

If you want to stay in the heart of the city then this would be the best place to go. The area is surrounded by city walls and temples. The best way to explore the area would be on foot. You will find everything right from the vibrant market, temples, shops and historical places to explore.
If you want a high end budget option then you can go for the inside house. It is a private hotel with a swimming pool of choice. But if you are looking for a budget friendly option then you can also go for Lamphu house where I stayed for 3 days. The hotel does have a private pool option but it has a swimming pool outside.
37. Nimman (Nimmanhaemin Road)
If you want all trendy modern places then this is the area you need to be in. The area is full with cool cafes, rooftop bars and coworking spaces. If you are a person who loves boutique shopping, coffees and wants a bit of nightlife then this is the place you should stay. If you want a luxurious stay then opt for Akyra Manor. Interestingly, Nimman has a rooftop pool with beautiful views. Otherwise you can also go to Hotel Yayee. This is a budget friendly option with a rooftop bar and a fantastic location.
38. Riverside
If you want to stay away from the hustle and bustle of the city then you would want to choose Riverside as your prime staying location. The area is popular because of its laid back atmosphere, green space and high end resorts. For a relaxing stay you can opt for 137 Pillars House which is a luxurious place to chill and spend your precious time. If you want something reasonable then you can go for Melia Chiang Mai. It has two swimming pools and spas for the guests. But if you want something cheaper than that you can go for Dusit Princess. There is a large room and a spacious pool for you to swim and enjoy.
