It is also known as Buddha Hill or Khao Phra Tamnak. It is a landmark in its own right and the views from this small hill are quite spectacular. Situated between Pattaya Beach and Jomtien Beach, this hill top area is the site of the Big Buddha Temple (Wat Phra Yai) and Pattaya’s highest point 98m above sea level. The golden Buddha statue, which stands tall and overlooks the area,  is visible from miles around, makes it peaceful for those wishing to pray and tourists alike.

In addition to its religious meaning, Pratumnak Hill is a place of peace and a stunning spot for panoramic views out over the Gulf of Thailand and bustling Pattaya. Its stairways are lined with colourful shrines, and serene gardens offer an authentic Thai Buddhist experience. Charm and variety are added to the place by signs of nearby Pattaya City and Chinese Shrine complex. Whether it is spiritual enlightenment you are looking for, a history buff or just breathtaking views, then Pratumnak Hill provides an awesome location which combines culture, tradition, and Views. It’s is a must-visit destination often included in carefully crafted Thailand tour packages from India.

History of Pratumnak Hill

The history of Big Buddha Temple at Pratumnak Hill goes back to the 1970s where the massive gold statue was there in order to show the power and inspiring faith of Buddhism in Pattaya, a once rapidly growing town as a tourist destination. Locally known as “Luang Phor Yai,” this Buddha is a source of peace and protection for the city. The compound of temples was built both as a place of spiritual seclusion for the local community and tourism site.

Over the years, the hill has become known not just for its religious significance, but also for its strategic importance as the city’s highest natural point. The hill took its name, “Phra Tamnak” or palace hill in Thai, from the official residences it was also used for by the Thai navy. The site serves as a mix of religious homage, cultural heritage and polite buff-tourism, and it has run into the lifeblood of Pattaya on both my visits.

Things to Do in the Pratumnak Hill

There are plenty of diverse things to do at Pratumnak Hill such as –

  • Admiring the Big Buddha Statue: The most prominent feature here is the 18-meter gold-colored Buddha in front of which local people come to pray and make merit. The calm surroundings mean visitors are free to witness traditional Buddhist ceremonies in peace.
  • Walk the Ornate Stairway: The staircase surrounded by gold serpents is a dramatic entrance to the temple itself and conveys that the journey can be just as significant as arriving.
  • Gaze over Pattaya Bay: At the top, take in panoramic vistas of Pattaya Bay, Jomtien Beach and the city skyline which are spectacular to capture on photos.
  • Check out the Pattaya City Sign: This iconic sign on a hill makes for a good photo opportunity, especially in the evenings when it’s lit up.
  • Take a Break in Chaloem Phrakiat Park: The parks are great for strolls and personal contemplation, shielded from the noise of the city.
