Phi Phi Islands

Explore the Phi Phi Islands with this complete guide covering top things to do, how to reach, best time to visit to plan your perfect trip.

The Phi Phi Islands are a group of six islands in the Andaman Sea, off the coast of southern Thailand. The two main islands are Ko Phi Phi Don (the largest and inhabited) and Ko Phi Phi Le (famous for its beaches and scenery). The islands lie about 40 to 46 km from Phuket and are reachable by ferry or speedboat.

These islands are known for their white sandy beaches, clear water, high limestone cliffs, and the colourful sea life. Because of this, many people from India and other countries visit this beautiful place in Thailand. The islands come under a national park, and the Hat Noppharat Thara Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park takes care of much of their land and marine life.

The beaches of Ko Phi Phi Le (especially “Maya Bay”) were featured in the film The Beach (2000) and drew huge tourist interest. The islands were badly hit by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and much of the infrastructure on Ko Phi Phi Don was destroyed. The place has a lot of popular tourism activities like snorkeling, diving, boat trips and hiking. Since so many tourists come to the islands, they are facing many environmental problems. There are issues like coral damage and difficulties in managing water and waste.
