Between November and April, it gets really cold. Some days, the temperature of Zero Point can drop to -5°C or even lower. So don’t forget your warm jacket and gloves are mandatory!

To reach here, you will have to travel about 150 kilometers from Gangtok through Lachung and Yumthang Valley. The journey will take almost 6 to 7 hours and you will need a local taxi which usually costs between ₹4,000 and ₹6,000. To enter Zero point you need to take a permit, but don’t worry your hotel or travel agent can help with that.

If you are talking about zero point temperature then you won’t find much here except cold. Situated at an altitude of around 15,300 feet, Zero Point Sikkim is the place to be from November to April when the temperature often drops below freezing (-0°C).

  • During the summer (May to September), the temperature ranges between 5°C and 15°C, which is much colder than the plains.

When it comes to staying at Zero Point I can say that there are no hotels at Zero Point Sikkim due to its high altitude, but the best place to stay nearby is Lachung, which near about 50 km away.

It has lots of homestays and small hotels, with prices ranging from ₹1,000 to ₹4,000 per night (choose according to your preference ). If you want to stay even closer, Yumthang Valley is just 23 km from Zero Point, though it offers only a few basic homestays.

Most travelers stay overnight in Lachung and visit Zero Point early the next morning. Booking in advance is a smart idea, especially during peak seasons.

Activities to do in Zero Point

While Zero Point is all about the snow , still there’s plenty of things to enjoy like making some snow balls and troughing it to watch others! You can play in the snow, take photos, and enjoy the white views of the snow mountains.

Many visitors love sipping hot tea or Maggi which is sold by local stalls. It hits differently in the cold! If you’re lucky, you might even see yaks or mountain birds.

The best time to visit Zero Point Sikkim is from March to May and October to early December. During these months, the weather is still cold but clear.

From November to February, heavy snowfall and its cause block the roads which affect your journey, but if you’re lucky, you might still get a chance to visit. Summer (March–May) offers better accessibility and more comfort, while early winter gives you that fresh snow experience without extreme roadblocks.

Carry a valid permit – You’ll need a special permit to visit Zero Point. Your tour operator or hotel in Gangtok can help you get it.

Start early – Roads can be rough, and the journey is long. Start your day early from Lachung or Yumthang.
