After the earthquake destroyed parts of the old monastery, a new monastery was built near the old monastery. The palace to the queen was turned into a monastery that serves as a testimony to the old religious culture of Sikkim.

Back in the 17th century, due to an earthquake, the monastery suffered severe damage. If you visit the monastery at present then you can find that the monastery is supported by iron railings and a new structure of the monastery is being constructed.

The visitors are needed to trek from Barfung retreat by climbing more than 500 stairs to cut the slope. The best time to visit this gompa is during the months of September to mid December or between the months of February and May, when you can witness a pleasurable climate.

The Doling Gompa follows the Nyingmapa sect of Tibetan Buddhism. This gompa was established by Lama Rigdzin Longyang back in the year 1718. It is also considered to be one of the oldest monasteries of Sikkim with a rich history.

The monastery features the footprint of Dorje Lingpa that is placed on the inner wall of Mani Lhakhang along with other images of Dorje Lingpa and Vajrapani that are carved by Dorje Lingpa himself.

The best time to visit Tendong Hill is during the summer season which exists during months of March to June. One has to trek a distance of 6 km from Damthang to reach Tendong Hill. The hill is situated at a distance of 100.3 km from Namchi and requires a tie period of around 18 minutes to reach, from where one has to trek to reach the top of the hill.

The word Tendong means apprised horn and has a watchtower and monastery located at the top of the hill. The monastery is named Tendong Gumpa, which is a Tibean Buddhist monastery. The Lepchas celebrate Tendong Lho rum feat to honor the hill for saving their ancestors.

Tendong Hill has offered shelter to over 90 species of birds and a number of mammals around the zone such as, leopards, red panda, Himalayan bears and many others. You can also obtain a mesmerizing view from the three storeyed watchtower of the eastern Himalayas. There is also a small monastery located atop the hill.

Samdruptse Hill Facts

Samdruptse Hill is believed to be a dormant volcano and only the prayers have held its lava from erupting out of the volcano. The construction of the statue of Guru Rinpoche took a time of approximately 7 years to be completed, under the sponsorship of Sikkim government.

The Samdruptse Hill features a statue of Guru Rinpoche, also known as Guru Padmasambhava that is 45 meters tall and has been showering its blessing over the visitors from over 1200 years. The statue is covered with gold and when the sunrays strikes at the idol, it sparkles, offering a stunning scenario for the visitors.
