Khecheopalri Lake is a sacred lake that is over 3500 years old and is situated at an altitude of 5600 feet above sea level. The word “Khecheopalri” means the heavenly abode of Padmasambhava, who is believed to be the second Buddha and was the 8th-century Buddhist master. If you visit the lake then you will find thick vegetation surrounding the lake, however, you will not be able to spot one single leaf on the lake. This lake is considered to be the pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists. This site also serves as a recreational space for tourists.

You can visit this lake between February and March when you can witness a religious fair where bamboo boats are made and butter lamps are placed left to sail in the lake from all directions and the religious chanting transforms the place into a religious event. Moreover, the weather during this time period is also very pleasant.

Folklore

As per the locals, the lake is said to be the footprint of a female Bodhisattva, named Tara Jetsun Dolma, who is also known as Mother of Liberation. Moreover, it is also believed that Lord Shiva has meditated in the Dupukney cave, placed above the lake. Locals also believe this lake to be a wish-fulfilling lake, as in the past it was said that the goddess of this lake appeared to a Lepcha girl and handed her a gem, which she lost. It is believed that this gem is now buried at the bottom of the lake, which makes it the wish fulfillment lake.
