How to Reach Gangtok
If you want to go to Gangtok on your own, it is very easy, from our own experience we are telling you how you can easily go to Gangtok.
By Bus : To travel to Gangtok the easiest route is through Siliguri. You can come to NJP or Bagdogra airport by train or flight . After that, if you want to go to Gangtok by bus, then come to the Transing Norgay Bus Terminal and take a bus. From here, you will get a bus to Gangtok. The fare is between Rs 275 - 500 .
By Train: If you want to go directly to Gangtok by train, that is also not possible because there is no direct train line to Gangtok. For this you will first have to come to NJP which is the nearest railway station from Gangtok and then you can reach Gangtok by bus or shared car.
By Flight: When you are thinking of going to Gangtok by flight, there is no direct airport there. There is Pakyong Airport, 27 km away from Gangtok, but it is closed most of the time. So we suggest you can land at Bagdogra Airport and from there you can take a private car or shared car to Gangtok directly.
Best Time for Gangtok Trip
- Spring & Summer(March to June) : Spring is the best time to travel to Gangtok or Sikkim. It is quite cold during this time and the flowers bloom all around temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C. The sky is quite clear, which is very good for sightseeing.
- Monsoon & Autumn (July to November): During monsoon, Gangtok and the whole of Sikkim receive heavy rainfall. During this time from June to August, there are landslides and floods along with rain. It is better not to visit here during this time. However, the environment here is beautiful in Autumn.
- Winter (December to January):
The temperature here drops a lot in the cold, around 6 to 8 °C. During this time, snowfall is sometimes seen near Nathula Pass. This is an ideal time to visit for honeymooners and snow lovers.
Best Places to visit Gangtok
- Tsomgo Lake : Tsomgo Lake is a glacial lake located 38 km from Gangtok. The snow-capped mountains surrounding this lake are the main reason for its beauty. Only Indian tourists can visit this lake and they must take a permit. Foreign tourists are prohibited from coming here. In winter, you can ride a yak on the snow here.
- Nathula Pass : This is a high altitude border area where the Indo-China border is located. Its altitude is about 14,140 feet (4,310 meters). If you come here on a clear day, you can see Chinese soldiers in the distance. It was once part of the ancient Silk Route. The temperature here ranges from -10°C to 17°C and it is almost cold all year round.
- MG Marg: MG Marg is the Mahatma Gandhi Marg. It is one of the best places in Gangtok because this place is completely traffic free, no vehicles are allowed here. At night, the lights of the street lamps enhance the beauty of this place. You can walk around in the evening, buy beautiful clothes and various kinds of handmade items. Along with this, you can try momos and thukpa here.
- Rumtek Monastery: Rumtek Monastery is located just 23 km from Gangtok. It is a very important Tibetan Buddhist monastery. The monastery is completely surrounded by mountains. Here you can meditate if you want or you can experience the silence here.
- Banjhakri Waterfalls & Energy Park: Banjhakri Waterfalls & Energy Park is located just 6–7 km from Gangtok. The waterfall here drops from a height of about 100 ft and is truly a sight to behold. Next to it you will see the statues of jhākri’ (forest healers). To enter here you have to pay an entry fee of ₹50.
- Hanuman Tok: Hanuman Tok is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. This temple is located just 11 km from Gangtok. It was built in 1968 and its height is about 7200 feet. This temple is completely maintained by the Indian Army. Everyone here believes that all the prayers that people come here with are fulfilled.
- Ganesh Tok: This is a small temple located in a beautiful place in Gangtok. From here you can see the beautiful view of Kanchenjunga. This temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha and is very small where only one person can enter at a time. This temple is located at an altitude of about 6500m and is located near the Tashi view point.
- Tashi View Point: Tashi View Point is also one of the attractions of Gangtok. It is famous for the beautiful view of the surrounding area. It is located 8 km from the main city and its height is about 8,500 feet. The entry fee here is between 10 rupees to 20 rupees.
- Namgyal Institute of Tibetology: Namgyal Institute of Tibetology is best for those who are interested in Tibetan art, culture, and Buddhist philosophy. It was established in 1958 and has rare Buddhist statues, thangkas, and ancient manuscripts on its ground floor. And this place is the largest place where the Tibetan collection is kept.
Things to Do in Gangtok
Gangtok Ropeway: This is one of the most popular activities in Gangtok. Even though the Gangtok Ropeway ride is not very long, it takes about 20 minutes. You can view the entire city of Gangtok in this short time and I am sure you will enjoy it a lot. This Gangtok Ropeway ride is for people of all ages. The basic fare for adults is ₹117 and for those below 18 years, it is ₹77.
Yak Safari: Yak Safari is a popular activity in Gangtok. Here, a gentle yak will take you through the snow along the banks of Tsomgo Lake. This activity is suitable for all ages. It will cost you around Rs. 100 to Rs. 500 depending on how long you want to ride.
Paragliding: Paragliding in Gangtok is a different experience. Here you will be floating above the mountains and everything below will seem small to you. There is nothing to be afraid of when you paraglide, an experienced pilot will fly with you. The total cost of paragliding in Sikkim will be between 2,500 to 5,000 rupees. This paragliding is a must-do if you go to Gangtok.
Mountain Biking: If you love cycling then you must try Mountain Biking. Here you can cycle through the mountain paths, enjoy the fresh mountain air. You will have to spend around 2500 taka to do this.
River Rafting at Teesta River: River rafting, which is one of the best activities in Gangtok, can be done here according to different labels. Starting from label 1 which is very low and the higher the label you choose, the more exciting it will be. But if you are a beginner, do not go to the highest label at first.
Hang Gliding: If you want to fly like a bird then you should definitely try this Hang Gliding. Here you will really fly like a bird but don't worry the experienced pilots there will help you completely in this regard. You can do this only if you are healthy and normal. You will have to spend ₹2500 per person to do the Hang Gliding activity
Try Local Sikkimese Food: If you are visiting Gangtok or Sikkim, you must try the street food here because here you will get authentic momos, thukpa and many other dishes that will really make you want for more. The price for most of the items are reasonable.
