Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary Guide

Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is a popular tourist attraction that offers you a heavenly experience. The vibrant color of the flowers surrounded by the snow-capped mountains highlights the rhododendrons of deep shades of colors like deep red and bright pink. You can also hear the chirping of birds when you visit the sanctuary. This sanctuary is a protected area that is spread over an expanse of 104 square kilometers.

Joseph Dalton Hooker, a British botanist, regarded this site as the main attraction of the Singalila range when he visited this place back in the 1800s. You can also witness over 600 species of rhododendrons in this area out of the total 1000 species of rhododendrons. Some of the rhododendron species that can be spotted here include Edgeworthii, pendulum, anthopogon, vaccinioides, camelliflorum, arboreum, cinnabarinum and others. Moreover, this sanctuary is also home to a number of species like Assamese macaque, Chinese pangolin, crestless porcupine, serow, palm civet, leopards, red panda, and Himalayan black bear.

How to Reach Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is situated at a distance of 29.5 km from Jorethang that will take approximately 1 hour and 4 minutes to reach this destination. There are a number of entry points for entering this sanctuary namely, Hilley, Soreng, and Dentang. Among these three, Hilley is the most preferred road to reach the sanctuary. You can also trek straight from Hilley which will require you to cover 4 km to reach the sanctuary.

The best time to visit Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is during the months of April and May when you can witness the rhododendrons in the valley bloom. On the other hand, if you visit between September and October, you may be able to witness stunning views of Mt. Kanchenjunga which will make your trip worth traveling.  

Travel Tips

There is an entry fee of ₹55 per person and ₹25 for DSLR. You also need to carry cash as there are no ATMs in the surrounding area. You also might carry a raincoat or umbrella to avoid the sudden rain shower.
