Folklore
The name Gurudongmar has been kept from the legendary Buddhist master, Guru Padmasambhava, who is also called Guru Rinpoche. He is believed to have established the Vajrayana sect of Buddhism that is being widely practiced in the Himalayan region.
As per the locals, a part of the lake is believed to be blessed by Guru Rinpoche for which that part of the lake remains unfreezed even during the winter.
In the past, the villagers appealed to Guru Rinpoche to address their problem of acute water crisis to which he blessed a part of the lake. After this incident, this lake has become a pilgrimage site among the locals.
