In an outstanding move by Odisha CM, Naveen Patnaik has announced the plan to establish the world’s first melanistic tiger safari. It is a groundbreaking move that will be the first of its kind globally. It is set to be located near Baripada in the Mayurbhanj district, as per the official statement made by the Odisha CM himself on X, previously known as Twitter.

This ambitious project aims to showcase Odisha’s unwavering commitment to preserve and display the unique biodiversity that graces the state. Also, this safari raises awareness regarding the critical conservation needs of these rare wildlife species.

If you have ever dreamed of going on safari, the Odisha government has announced the world’s first black tiger safari to offer tourists a chance to glimpse the only black tigers in the world. It covers an expansive 200-hectare area adjacent to National Highway 18.

The selected site is about 15 km from the Similipal Tiger Reserve, the only habitat for melanistic tigers worldwide, as per the last All India Tiger Estimation Report by the National Tiger Conservation Authority, also known as NTCA, in 2018. This new area is about 200 hectares, as per reports.

Black tigers, also known as pseudo melanistic tigers, have been reported in the STR since the 1970s  and are not a separate species but rather Bengal tigers with genetic mutations. A couple of years ago, researchers and scientists at the National Center for Biological Sciences in Bengaluru identified a single gene mutation that brings black stripes and this unique pattern in these tigers.

This mutation led to the spreading of black stripes, creating this beautiful and rare pattern known as pseudo-melanism. The study also specified that the melanistic tigers in Similipal may have originated from a small founding population, ultimately leading to inbreeding.

As per CM Naveen Patnaik’s announcement,

Glad to announce that Odisha is setting an exclusive Melanistic Tiger Safari near Similipal Tiger Reserve in Mayurbhanj. Tourists and Visitors can now have a glimpse of the rare and majestic species found only in Odisha.”

CM Naveen Patnaik said on X, previously known as Twitter.

These tigers of STP have a variation in their coat that causes their stripes to be different or evenly merged. The unique feature of these tigers is their captivating dark stripe pattern set against the backdrop of golden or white fur. It has become a recent attraction in the region.

CM Patnaik expressed excitement about displaying these rare creatures, emphasizing that this safari will be the only place worldwide to witness such a unique and exclusive species.

The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, Susanta Nanda, affirmed that it is the exclusive natural habitat and the chosen site mirrors the landscape of Similipal, offering a suitable environment for these unique creatures. This safari in Odisha aims to house surplus tigers from Nandankanan Zoo along with rescued or orphaned tigers unfit for the wild but great for display in an open area.

This blend of conservation efforts is expected to attract many visitors and further enhance the appeal of Similipal Tiger Reserve. STR spans a vast area of 2750 sq km and witnesses the state’s rich biodiversity. The reserve offers a sanctuary for more than 300 avian species, 50 mammal species, 60 reptile species, and much more.

Also, with the addition of the melanistic tiger safari, the reserve promises to elevate its allure and offer tourists an immersive experience amidst the wonders of beautiful nature. This black tiger safari represents a milestone in wildlife tourism, guides conservation efforts, and highlights the importance of protecting and celebrating diverse wildlife.
