Settha Thavisin, Thailand’s PM, has announced that the government intends to extend visa-free travel privileges to citizens of many countries. Recently, it has waived visas for citizens of India and China with an aim to boost tourism which is the main driver of the second biggest economy of South-East Asia.
From January 1st to February 11th, Thailand received about 4.39 million foreign tourist arrivals which have increased by about 48 percent since last year. The Thailand government expects a rise of 34 to 35 million tourists in the current year from about 28 million the prior year. Pre-pandemic that was in 2019, as per the records, Thailand recorded about 40 million foreign tourists.
The move has been taken by taking into account the commitment to strengthening tourism in Thailand. The PM outlined measures to ensure safety and to create favorable conditions for travelers after the move has been initiated. According to the reports, the PM proposed an intensifying association to strengthen the Thailand- Australia Free Trade Agreement that is to enhance the value and volume of trade. This move is taken by the government to grow tourism and foster closer ties with China.

Thailand is among the most preferred destinations among backpackers worldwide owing to its beautiful beaches and amazing advantages. However, the government also clarifies that this scheme does not cover accidents due to intent, negligence, or risky behaviors. Also, the country has declared many measures in the past few months to boost tourism, in January 2024, Thailand allowed a tax cut on alcoholic beverages and entertainment venues.
Also, in 2023 December, the country extended the operating hours of entertainment venues and nightclubs in some most amazing destinations like Chaing Mai, Bangkok, Samui, Pattaya, and Phuket allow them to stay open till 4 AM i.e. for an extra two hours. In 2023 November Thailand also waived visa requirements for Indians and Taiwan travelers till 2024 May.
As per the reports, about 28 million people visited Thailand in 2023, which marked an increment of about 11 million in comparison to last year. In 2024, the government is aiming for 35 million travelers and targeting revenue of about 55 million dollars to revitalize and reignite economic growth.

“The visa-free program for China has helped stimulate the economy “quite a lot”.
