India has officially begun rolling out biometric e-passports in major cities. These passports come with embedded chips that store your personal and biometric data, making international travel safer and faster for Indian citizens.
An e-passport looks like a regular passport but includes a microchip inside its cover. This chip securely stores your photo, fingerprints, and other biometric data. A gold symbol on the front makes it easy to identify.
The e-passport launch began in April 2024 in selected cities like Nagpur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Jaipur, and Ranchi. The government plans to expand it across India by mid-2025 as part of Passport Seva 2.0.
E-passports allow for faster, contactless immigration using smart e-gates. They help reduce waiting times, prevent identity fraud, and bring India in line with international passport security standards.
You can apply via the Passport Seva Portal. Just register online, fill out your application, pay the fees, and book an appointment at your nearest Passport Seva Kendra for biometric enrollment.
All e-passports are manufactured at the India Security Press in Nashik. This supports the Make in India initiative and ensures tight control over data security and document integrity.
India’s e-passport is just the beginning. Soon, mobile passport wallets, blockchain ID verification, and digital visa integration will reshape the way we travel making it paperless, secure, and smart.
