Since the past four years, Tourism in Rajasthan have surged 12 times, marking a substantial recovery in foreign tourist visits, which declined during the COVID-19 pandemic. As per the Rajasthan Tourism Department, the state has seen a remarkable increase in domestic tourism, with 17.90 crore tourists visiting the state in 2023.
About 18 crore domestic as well as 17 lakh foreign tourists visited Rajasthan in 2023 as The State assembly was informed.
As per the government reply in the Rajasthan Assembly, about 33.44 crore domestic tourists and more than 22.20 lakh foreign tourists visited the state from January 2020 to December 2023 to enjoy heritage sites.
In 2023, over 17.90 crore domestic tourists and more than 16.99 lakh foreign tourists visited Rajasthan as the government replied to a question raised by MLA Kalicharan Saraf.
The government explained that a total of 1,51,17,239 domestic tourists and 4,46,467 foreign tourists visited Rajasthan in 2020. In 2021, about 2,19,88,734 domestic and 34,806 foreign tourists visited, and in 2023, 10,83,28,156 domestic and 39,684 foreign tourists visited.
Daleep Singh, Deputy Director of the Tourism Department, said, “Rajasthan has been a major tourist attraction among the tourists; after the coronavirus pandemic, a large number of domestic tourists have started the state .The number of foreign tourists has also significantly risen”.
In the desert state, the hotel association expressed optimism following the visit of the French President to Jaipur,, forecasting new opportunities for tourism. President of the Jaipur Hotels association, M Hussain, believes that this will unlock fresh options,, especially considering the past high influx of French tourists to the state before the pandemic.
With a broader point of view, the tourism and hospitality actor recently lauded the focus of the government led by PM Narendra Modi on domestic tourism in the Interim Budget 2024-25 announced by Nirmala Sitharaman, Finance Minister, on 1st February 2024.

The elected BJP government’s main focus is to make Rajasthan a leader in the tourism sector in India. The most recent visit of French President Emmanuel Macron and Czech Republic PM Petr Fiala to Rajasthan has helped and supported the state to present its image as a proffered foreign destination for overseas elites.

Also, Diya Kumari, Jaipur’s royal family member and deputy CM who holds the tourism department portfolio, is nowadays holding meetings with foreign delegations for this purpose. She said,
“The government is determined to transform Rajasthan into a premier tourism destination. A 100-day action agenda has been given to the department officials. A comprehensive strategy needs to be formulated and implemented”.

She explained that her plans consist of collaborating with many departments to enhance the road, rail and air connectivity to Rajasthan. To fulfill this aim of establishing quality basic infrastructure, improvement in hospitality sector services is also vital. She revealed tourism numbers when asked by Kalicharan Saraf, BJP MLA, in the Rajasthan Assembly.
She replied that about 18 crore domestic and 17 lakh foreign tourists came to the State in 2023. MLA Safari also asked for the year-wise details of domestic and foreign tourist visits made to Rajasthan from Jan 2020 to Dec 2023.
