Machu Pichu Tourism

Machu Pichu, Peru’s iconic heritage site, is not popular only for its architectural marvel but also has historical and cultural importance. It is an archeological treasure that should be preserved for future generations for sure.

Previously tourists would visit this heritage site more than once with the same ticket, like entering ruins at daybreak and then back again to see in the afternoon sun from different facets of the landscape. Also previously you could enter without a guide, but now all things have been changed.

How much planning is needed, specifically through a third party who manages the ticketing systems? Tourists cannot enter without a guide and also cannot visit the site multiple times on the same ticket. Now,, there is a change as the tourism industry of Peru started taking steps to recover and is trying to make the process more easy as well as transparent.

Now, the state-run ticketing website is working efficiently for all Machu Picchu tourists, and the government is increasing the daily visitor numbers by allowing entry. The plan will commence in April. Also, the new circuits that were started in 2021 separated the site into four paths to help prevent overcrowding of tourists.

The change has been initiated to increase the number of visitors and this step is taken when countries like Brazil and Columbia are setting new records and Peru is stuck at 60 percent only. Before the pandemic shutdown, the place saw about 1.5 million tourists and in 2023 it was about 950,000.

For this change, there were several protests that were held throughout the Cusco region last year, along with a one-week strike in January by shutting public transportation to Machu Picchu that left visitors worried. The strike was due to the new Machu Pichu ticketing system that was resolved instantly and has since been restored.

According to Fernando Rodriguez,

“The issues last year were far more serious and widespread than the current situation in Machu Picchu, which is very local and contained,”.

Fernando Rodriguez,

In spite of this publicity, the palace has seen a big year as bookings continued from April to October for the upcoming tourist season, which outpaced last year’s numbers. It is noted that there was a 55 percent increment in bookings that was in February in comparison to February 2023.

Also if protests and strikes paused the tourists last year now it was blowing over as it has been noted that just 5 percent of guests were affected by the protests and were confused about whether to book a ticket.

This new system, starting in April, will greatly impact visitors who will be allowed to visit Machu Pichu and will raise the maximum number of tickets to about 5600 on a few dates in peak season from 4044. This increase has been confirmed by the tourism board of Peru in an email.
