The Museum Island has five museums located on the island namely, Pergamon Museum, Bode Museum, Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, and Altes Museum. Ten years after the destruction of the Berlin wall in the year 1999, the initiative to restore the ensemble, Museum Island master plan was initiated. 

Pergamon Museum is a three-winged building that was developed by Alfred Messel and has been closed since October 2023 for extensive renovation. The museum has an extensive collection of classical antiques of Roman and Greek art along with a museum of Islamic art and a museum of the ancient Near East. The famous work of the museum is the Roman Pergamon Altar, which is a sculpture showcasing the battle between giants and gods. The renovation of the Pergamon Altar is expected to remain close till the year 2027.   

Bode Museum was completely renovated back in the year 2005 and it houses a collection of sculptures from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. These collections consist of the work of Canova, Bernini, and Donatello. The museum also houses a numismatic collection along with a museum of Byzantine art. 

Neues Museum took a time period of 10 years to restore and renovate by a renowned architect, David Chipperfield. The transformation to an unusual architectural style without losing its authentic character. Neues Museum holds the globally renowned bust of Nefertiti along with a collection of classical antiques, a papyrus collection, an Egyptian museum, and a museum of early history and prehistory.   

Alte Nationalgalerie means Old National Gallery, which is similar to an ancient temple and reflects the architecture of Greek temples, developed by Friedrich August Stuler. There is a fine collection of sculptures and paintings highlighting the early modern age, impressionism, Biedermeier, romanticism, and classicism.

Some of the renowned workpieces are The Thinker by Auguste Rodin, The Monk by the Sea by Caspar David, and Princesses Group by Johann Gottfried Schadow along with the works of Renoir, Monet, Manet, Menzel, and Schinkel.  

Altes Museum is the first museum building on the island that was built back in the year 1830 and was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel which has a collection of royal art. These collections are showcased in an antique-style building and also have other domes consisting of coins, vases, jewelry, and sculptures from Greek and Etruscan art. Moreover, there is also a collection of silver and gold jewelry.
