In a significant step towards boosting tourism from India and China, the South African Department of Home Affairs has officially launched the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) digital platform. This initiative aims to simplify and expedite the visa process for large tour groups from these key markets, addressing long-standing inefficiencies in the system.
Previously, tourists from India and China faced challenges such as lengthy queues, bureaucratic delays, and difficulties in processing group applications. With only two South African missions in each country serving a combined population of 2.8 billion, the system was under immense strain.
The newly introduced TTOS platform overcomes these issues by enabling vetted and approved tour operators to submit group visa applications online. This eliminates the need for tourists to visit a mission, fill out forms, or wait in long lines. Instead, visas will be processed and issued digitally within just three days.
This transformation is expected to have a significant impact on tourism numbers. In 2023, South Africa welcomed only 37,000 tourists from China and 79,000 from India. By streamlining visa procedures, the TTOS aims to drive substantial growth in visitor arrivals from these rapidly expanding travel markets.

South Africa’s 90-Day Visa-Free Access for Indian Travelers
As part of broader efforts to attract more visitors, South Africa’s new visa policy, effective January 2025, grants Indian travelers visa-free entry for up to 90 days. The TTOS digital system further complements this initiative by allowing approved tour operators to manage group visa applications seamlessly, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and accelerating processing times.
Dr. Leon Schreiber, Minister of Home Affairs, emphasized the significance of this initiative, stating, “The fact that we took the TTOS from concept to implementation in under six months demonstrates our commitment to digital transformation and our role in driving economic growth through tourism.” He noted that research suggests every twelve additional tourists drawn through TTOS could generate one new job in South Africa, highlighting the scheme’s economic potential.
Minister Schreiber also expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts behind this initiative, acknowledging contributions from the in-house development team, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshaveni, and Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille. “This reflects the power of collaboration within the Government of National Unity as we work towards our top priority—economic growth and job creation,” he added.
The launch of the TTOS digital platform represents a major advancement in South Africa’s goal to establish itself as a premier global tourist destination while fostering economic development and employment opportunities.
