Sri Lanka to Launch E-Visa Facility for Indian Tourists in January

New Delhi: Sri Lanka is set to introduce an e-visa system for Indian tourists starting in January, according to Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath. Speaking during an interaction with the India Foundation while accompanying President Anura Dissanayake on a diplomatic visit to India, Herath announced that a gazette notification will soon be issued, granting e-visa access to citizens of 39 countries, including India.

The e-visa system reportedly includes an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) feature, streamlining the visa application process for visitors.

Herath expressed optimism about the e-visa initiative, noting that it could help revive Sri Lanka’s tourism sector, which has faced significant challenges in recent years. The country experienced a sharp decline in international visitors following the 2018 Easter Sunday bombings, a situation further exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent political unrest.

The foreign minister emphasized the importance of Indian tourists, stating that the e-visa system could attract more visitors from India, one of Sri Lanka’s key tourism markets. He also hinted at the possibility of exploring a bridge connection between the two nations if both sides show interest in the idea.

Addressing security concerns, Herath reassured that Sri Lanka remains committed to safeguarding India’s interests. He reiterated President Dissanayake’s stance that Sri Lanka will avoid actions that could compromise India’s security. This statement comes amidst growing concerns over Chinese naval and research vessels docking at Sri Lankan ports under previous administrations.

How to Apply
Once the e-visa programme is launched, Indian tourists can apply for visas through the designated official website. The initiative is expected to simplify travel procedures, making it easier for visitors to explore Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty.
