Here are 10 key points about Thailand’s new biometric system rollout at its major airports:
- Biometric Rollout Across Major Airports: Thailand will introduce a biometric identification system at its six main airports, including Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang in Bangkok.
- Facial Recognition Technology: The system leverages facial recognition to verify passenger identities, eliminating the need for manual document checks.
- Domestic Launch in November: Domestic travelers will be the first to access the biometric system starting in November.
- International Launch in December: The system will be fully operational for international travelers beginning in December.
- Streamlined Travel Process: Biometric technology will speed up the travel process by removing the need for traditional document checks at multiple touchpoints.
- Reduced Waiting Times: Passengers can expect shorter wait times at baggage drop-off, security checkpoints, and boarding gates.
- Aim for Enhanced Convenience and Efficiency: The biometric system is designed to offer a smoother, more convenient experience for travelers.
- Increased Passenger Traffic: AOT served over 119 million passengers in the fiscal year ending in September 2024, marking a 19.22% increase from the prior year.
- Higher Projections for 2025: AOT anticipates handling approximately 130 million passengers this fiscal year, driven by greater international connectivity.
- Support for Growing Travel Demand: The new system aligns with Thailand’s goals to accommodate rising passenger volumes and boost operational efficiency across its airports.
Thailand will soon launch a new biometric identification system at its six major airports to enhance travel efficiency and convenience, according to the Airports of Thailand (AOT). The system, which uses facial recognition to verify passengers’ identities, will open for domestic travelers in November, with full implementation for international travelers set for December, AOT President Kirati Kitmanawat announced.

This biometric technology will allow passengers to bypass traditional document checks at key points, such as baggage drop-off, security checkpoints, and boarding gates, reducing wait times and easing airport procedures, Kirati explained in a statement reported by Xinhua.
AOT, Thailand’s largest airport operator, handled over 119 million passengers across its six international airports, including Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang in Bangkok, during the fiscal year ending in September 2024—a 19.22% increase from the previous year. AOT projects an even higher passenger count this fiscal year, expecting close to 130 million travelers due to expanding international flight routes.
